Rees-Mogg attempted to bring calm to the fringe event, saying: “Ladies and gentlemen, let us have a proper and thoughtful debate.”

The MP, who has been touted as a leadership hopeful, was challenged directly over his views on abortions and food banks, the use of which he has previously called “uplifting.”
