Many people swear by deodorant marketed to men regardless of their gender — here’s why

It can be overwhelming to choose when there are so many deodorants out there.

  • While there is no proof that men’s deodorant works better than women’s deodorant, some women prefer deodorants created with men in mind.
  • On average, men’s deodorant is cheaper per ounce than women’s deodorant.
  • In theory, the fragrances used in men’s deodorants might be better at masking body odor.

Anecdotally, some people who identify as women have long-preferred using deodorants marketed to men. Although some women rave about men’s deodorants claiming they are better, stronger, and more powerful – there’s actually no proof of this.

One of the main reasons there are distinctions between deodorants marketed towards men and women is because it makes sense from a marketing and financial standpoint for the companies who make the products.

As Kevin George, vice president and general manager for Unilever deodorants told USA Today “You have to differentiate yourself in the marketplace … If you’re a brand for everybody, you’re a brand for nobody.” A unisex deodorant doesn’t quite hold the same brand value to companies as gendered deodorants aimed at specific consumers.

HowStuffWorks.com reported that Canadian television series “Street Cents” did a study where they learned that deodorants marketed to a certain gender from the same brand have the same active ingredient in the same amounts – the only differences between the sticks were scent and packaging. If you read the ingredient lists for deodorants marketed to men or women of the same brand and you’ll find the ingredients are nearly, if not entirely, identical.

Despite the fact that there is very little difference between deodorants marketed to men and women, here’s why some women prefer “men’s deodorant” and why you may consider making the switch.

Men’s deodorant is cheaper

A 2011 study called “The Cost of Doing Femininity: Gender Disparities in Pricing of Personal Care Products and Services” showed that, on average, women’s deodorants cost $1.44 per ounce while men’s are $1.15 per ounce.

Men’s deodorants take body hair into account

Men’s deodorants typically glide and are gel-based because that delivery method is often better for men with armpit hair, but people of all genders can have armpit hair too. Deodorants marketed to women aren’t always formulated to work well on armpits with hair.

Men’s deodorant fragrances could be more desirable for masking body odor

Jennifer Chwalek of Union Square Laser Dermatology told New York Magazine that “deodorants technically only mask or neutralize the body odor caused by bacteria.” Meaning, choosing a deodorant is basically just choosing what scent you’d like to mask your body odor with.

Many of “men’s deodorants” have fragrances like “fresh,” “pure sport,” and “air”, whereas women’s brands often have fragrances like “summer berry,” “blue fig,” “French vanilla,” and even “pumpkin spice.”

Basically, it all depends on what you like – and that could be deodorant “for men.”

But, of course, it depends on personal preference and judgment

All in all, men and women’s deodorants have essentially the same formulas. But, men’s deodorants are generally cheaper and could offer different scent options, depending on your preference. It’s up to you to decide which deodorant is best for you, no matter what gender you identify as.

University of Maryland flip-flops and fires DJ Durkin one day after controversial decision to reinstate the football coach

  • DJ Durkin has been fired as head football coach at the University of Maryland.
  • The school initially chose to reinstate Durkin after an investigation following the death of a player during practice.
  • The school reversed the decision after 24 hours of widespread criticism.

DJ Durkin has been fired as head coach of the University of Maryland football team, according to multiple reports, including ESPN.

The move came 24 hours after the school had reinstated the coach on the recommendation of the board of regents which had been investigating the death of Jordan McNair. The 19-year-old offensive lineman died two weeks after suffering heatstroke during a practice in May.

The board concluded that Durkin had been “unfairly blamed for the dysfunction in the athletic department,” and that it was “not fair to place all of [the responsibility] at his feet.”

The decision to reinstate Durkin was met with widespread criticism.

“This is why people don’t trust big-time athletics,” ESPN’s Paul Finebaum said on ESPN Radio. “This is a complete and total sham. It’s a travesty … There’s no rhyme or reason for this. There’s no common sense. This is the big guys running the program.”

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan was among those who called on the school to reconsider the decision to reinstate Durkin, saying the school had “let down” the university community and the citizens of the state.

“I am deeply troubled by the lack of transparency from the Board of Regents, and deeply concerned about how they could have possibly arrived at the decisions announced yesterday,” Hogan said in a statement, adding: “I am calling on both the University System of Maryland Board of Regents and President Wallace Loh to reconsider their decisions and to schedule a public hearing to address these issues in an open and transparent manner … The University System of Maryland has let down the University of Maryland community and the citizens of Maryland, and now is the time to fix it.”

How to pop a pimple without destroying your skin

  • Experts recommend always going to a dermatologist to get an extraction properly done
  • If you can’t wait for a doctor’s appointment, there is a way to pop a pimple at home without damaging your skin
  • There are other ways to pop a zit other than squeezing it
  • If you really have to pop your pimple, use Q-Tips instead of your fingers, squeeze gently, and then put a dermatologist-approved topical treatment on top

We’ve all been there – a giant (and usually painful) pimple pops up at the worst possible moment, and you want to get rid of it ASAP. The truth is, you really should wait it out or go to a dermatologist, said Dhaval Bhanusali, a dermatologist in New York.

“It’s by far the smartest thing you can do if you want to avoid costly laser fees later on,” he told INSIDER.

But what if you can’t hold out for a doctor’s appointment? There is a way to pop your own zits at home (although every single dermatologist INSIDER spoke to discourages performing your own extractions).

“Popping a pimple seems really simple, but there is a special technique to prevent complications,” said Jennifer Channual, a California-based dermatologist. “When you squeeze a pimple, you might be pushing the contents not only out to the surface but also below the skin, which can cause inflammation and may make the pimple take longer to resolve,” she told INSIDER.

So how do you avoid all the irritation and just get rid of the pimple? INSIDER spoke to board-certified dermatologists to get the best tips on how to extract a blemish properly.

Be aware of the risks.

Squeezing your own zits comes with a lot of potentially bad consequences, so it’s better to only do so if it’s an emergency, said Jennifer Kitchin, a New York-based dermatologist. “Picking and popping your pimples puts you at risk for scarring and infection, and is not a smart solution for your acne,” she said. “See your board certified dermatologist for a personalized acne treatment regimen, so that you will have treatments at your fingertips to both treat and prevent acne breakouts.”

Focus on mitigating inflammation, said Avnee Shah, a dermatologist in New Jersey. “The pressure you put on a pimple may cause puss to come out, but it usually causes intense inflammation at the bottom as well – which tends to leave behind a red or brown spot,” she said. “The less inflammation caused, the better the spot will heal.”

Consider non-invasive treatments first.

While your first instinct may be to squeeze the blemish on your face, Bhanusali said that there is a less-risky alternative.

“Apply ice to the area for a few seconds to constrict the blood flow so it looks less red,” he said. “Then put over-the-counter cortisone and a touch of benzoyl peroxide onto to a bandage and put that on at night. By morning, should be 75 percent better.”

If you’re not feeling the ice cube hack, New York-based dermatologist Susan Bard told INSIDER to use drying topical products. “Try applying some acne medicine as a spot treatment to help dry out the pimple,” she said. “Don’t overdo it, as it can cause the skin to get dry or even break down – which will ultimately take longer to heal.”

If you’re looking for another idea, California-based dermatologist Kate Gant says heat can help. “Soak a clean washcloth in warm water and gently hold it over the offending blemish for two minutes,” she told INSIDER. “This is the safest way to help closed comedones (whiteheads) erupt without extra trauma that can lead to scarring. “

Make sure it’s ready to pop.

It’s important to wait until a pimple is completely ready to pop, Andrew Kim, a dermatologist in New Hampshire, told INSIDER.

“Popping pimples is all about mitigating the collateral damage,” he said. “Most people pop them too early before they are ripe and end up squeezing too hard, causing the pimple to rupture underneath the skin rather than out. When done correctly, [extractions] can help speed the healing process.”

Bard agreed with Kim, noting that you should only extract pimples that are fully on the surface of the skin. If you have a deep pimple, Bard said you should either go see a dermatologist or put an over-the-counter topical treatment on it.

Keep it clean and quick.

If you must pop your pimple, keep it as sanitary as possible, Tennessee-based dermatologist Carley Fowler told INSIDER. “The best way to pop a pimple at home is to use two Q-Tips and squeeze from the base,” she said. “This minimizes trauma to the surrounding skin, which will decrease inflammation and pigment deposition after the fact. After you pop it, apply a thin film of benzoyl peroxide gel (which is available over the counter) to kill the bacteria causing the pimple. Cover with a spot band-aid for a few hours, and you should heal in a few days.”

Bard added that you should never force a pimple to pop, as it could be a sign that it’s not ready to be extracted. “Do not press hard,” she said. “If nothing comes out, stop.”

Treat it with a dermatologist-approved topical.

Popping pimples isn’t the time to try DIY.

It’s important to trust the pros when it comes to what products you use on your skin, Christina Haverstock, a dermatologist in North Carolina, told INSIDER. “I do not recommend mixing homemade tinctures of essential oils or home ingredients,” she said. “I have seen many chemical burns from tea tree oil, vinegar, and other pantry items inappropriately applied to zits.”

Looking for suggestions? All of these dermatologists recommended products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. They’re easy to find (just check your local drugstore), and they’ll clear up your stubborn zit quickly – without wreaking havoc on your skin.

Since 1978, Ben & Jerry’s has been crafting some of the world’s most unique flavors of ice cream. But like many good things, their ice cream flavors don’t last forever.

The company created the “Flavor Graveyard” where ice cream concoctions long passed can be laid to rest, remembered for their delicious tastes, strange add-ins, and creamy textures. The Graveyard exists as a website and an actual cemetery with headstones at their company headquarters in Waterbury, Vermont.

Combing through Ben & Jerry’s list of dearly departed flavors, we decided to round up our own list of flavors we wish would come back to life and make it into our freezer shelves.

Dressed as Christine Blasey Ford, Milo Yiannopoulos railed against the #MeToo movement and said political correctness has ruined Halloween

  • Milo Yiannopoulos railed against the #MeToo movement and the political correctness of Halloween during a livestreamed speech on Wednesday.
  • The conservative agitator was supposed to give the speech to a class at NYU, but Mayor Bill de Blasio postponed the event due to security concerns.
  • The former Breitbart senior editor dressed as Dr. Christine Blasey Ford for the talk, and said that she “represents everything that’s wrong with women.”

Conservative agitator Milo Yiannapoulos railed against the political correctness of Halloween and the #MeToo movement in a live-streamed speech on Wednesday, while dressed as Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

The speech was intended to be given to a class at NYU, but the event was shut down by Mayor Bill de Blasio the night before, due to security concerns.

The former Breitbart senior editor was invited to speak about the politics of Halloween by Professor Michael Rectenwald.

When the event was put off, Yiannopoulos decided to broadcast it live from his YouTube account.

Yiannopoulos’ argument was that liberals are ruining Halloween with their political correctness.

“Political correctness, which we thought we’d beaten in the 1990s, is back from the dead, and it’s been more difficult to kill than Nosferatu himself.

At one point during the speech, Yiannopoulos took a swig of some top-shelf gin.

“Halloween has been stripped of all traces of irreverence on college campuses. Now the issue isn’t ‘is it funny, is it scary, is it spooky?’ But, ‘is it appropriate?'”

“Whether a costume is a case of ‘cultural appropriation’ and whether a get-up or a party theme insults or threatens to ‘erase’ members of marginalized or oppressed identity groups, is now the purpose of Halloween policing,” he said.

Yiannopoulos also digs into the theme of his own costume, calling Christine Blasey Ford “everything that’s wrong with women.”

“She’s the #MeToo movement personified, in the sense that we don’t really know anything about what happened 34, 35 years ago, yet the female half of this country was ready to throw a man’s life away, and that of his female wife and female children, on the basis of unsubstantiated allegations. Now that really is a story for 3 a.m. on Halloween.

Yiannopoulos went on to say that he “feels for the boys of Western culture, who are going to live their entire lives in fear of upsetting the wrong woman.”

“We had a sizeable portion of the country recently who appeared to be persuaded that an alleged drunken teenage fumble was enough to cause a woman decades of depression, anxiety and mental instability, marital breakdown, lifelong psychic trauma and we’re not supposed to make fun of that?Yiannopoulos later changed out of his costume to answer some questions.

“Daphne de Maurier never imagined something so awful, a world where literally nothing is real and everything is lies, fake news if you like…But that is the world we are living in and that’s the world the left created,” he said.

Yiannopoulos first gained notoriety working for Breitbart News, but was forced to resign from the far-right outlet in 2017 when a video surfaced of him appearing to defend pedophilia.

He also lost his deal with Simon & Schuster to publish the book, “Dangerous,” but ultimately published it himself.

The Packers traded away Ty Montgomery just days after he blew their chance at taking down the best team in football

  • Ty Montgomery fumbled away the Green Bay Packers chance of winning on Sunday.
  • Two days later, he was traded away to the Ravens for basically nothing.
  • The sequence made clear one of the biggest differences between the Rams and the Packers so far this season.

It’s been a rough few days for Ty Montgomery.

On Sunday, Montgomery spoiled the Packers’ shot at yet another fourth-quarter comeback. After the Los Angeles Rams scored a late go-ahead field goal, the stage was set for Aaron Rodgers – down two points with two minutes remaining to the best team in football. The Packers would get the ball back needing only a field goal to win.

But Montgomery fielded the Rams kickoff and rather than opting for a touchback, he decided to try for a return. He fumbled the ball away, and with it, the Packers’ chances of winning the game.

On the sidelines, Rodgers was miffed that his fourth-quarter comeback had been spoiled.

After the game, reports from the Packers locker room were fiery against Montgomery’s decision to take the ball out of the end zone.

“I mean, what the f— are you doing?” one player asked. “We’ve got Aaron Rodgers, the best I’ve ever seen, and you’re gonna take that risk? I mean, it’s ’12’! All you gotta do is give him the ball, and you know what’s gonna happen.”

Read more: Packers players rip running back who went rogue and returned a late kick, then fumbled to end the game

Then, just two days later, Montgomery was gone. After three and a half seasons with the Packers, Montgomery was dumped to the Baltimore Ravens just before the trade deadline. If anyone needed proof that the Packers were eager to get rid of him, their asking price was a 2020 seventh-round draft pick.

While no one involved in the deal can say it out loud, it’s clear that the Packers decided that after such a monumental error, Montgomery couldn’t be with the team for another game.

For the Ravens, the deal worked out – Montgomery is still a versatile offensive weapon that could be useful for a team that hasn’t blown anyone away with their rushing attack so far this year. And for the Packers, it was a necessary cut off dead weight.

When the Rams got the ball after Montgomery’s fumble, the winning play wasn’t another score, but instead, Todd Gurley’s decision to fall short of the end zone. The move came not just from Gurley, but the team’s focus on knowing a situation, preparing for every moment, and putting the team before individual accolades.

For the Rams, that meant giving up an easy touchdown to ensure the Packers didn’t get the ball back. For the Packers, that means taking a knee in the end zone so you can make sure your once-in-a-lifetime quarterback gets his shot to lead you to victory.

Montgomery didn’t, and now he’s gone.

The Kardashian-Jenner sisters are known for their elaborate Halloween costumes, but they basically outdid themselves while stepping out for a huge Halloween bash Wednesday night.

The “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” stars wore lingerie and giant angel wings that looked straight out of a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. The Daily Mail shared a full look of the outfits used in the photo shoot by photographer Marcus Hyde, while Kim Kardashian West gave a sneak peak on Twitter on her Instagram stories.

According to Kardashian West, Victoria’s Secret sent them official Victoria’s Secret wings and outfits fit for the runway.

Kylie Jenner paired her wings with a sparkling bodysuit, while her sisters Kendall Jenner, Kardashian West, Khloe Kardashian, and Kourtney Kardashian went with white lingerie. Kourtney also switched her costume up by wearing thinner, wispier wings than her sisters’ more fluffy feathers.

Kardashian West tagged photographer Hyde in her Instagram story, who often posts photos of the two when they work together photo shoots. Entertainment Tonight reports that Hyde was in a car accident on Monday morning, and Kardashian West asked her Twitter followers for prayers on Tuesday.

Trump says the US may send more troops to the US-Mexico border than the US currently has deployed to Afghanistan

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the US may deploy anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 troops to the US-Mexico border in response to the approaching migrant caravans.

Should this happen, the US will have more troops serving at the southern border than there are in Iraq and Syria, possibly even Afghanistan, where roughly 14,000 US troops are deployed.

These forces would join the thousands of Customs and Border Protection officials, as well as 2,100 National Guard personnel advancing Operation Guardian Support on the border. The Department Of Defense and Department of Homeland Security announced Monday that roughly 5,200 additional troops would head south, with officials noting that this was just the beginning.

The commander of US Northern Command revealed Tuesday that there will be additional forces. These troops, limited to Title X work by the Posse Comitatus act, will carry out missions as part of Operation Faithful Patriot, which is in support of CBP. The Trump administration has declared the situation at the border a national emergency.

While many critics have called the deployments, which are already underway, political stunts ahead of the mid-term elections, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis told reporters Wednesday that “we don’t do stunts.”

The force of mostly engineers and military police will be deployed to Texas, Arizona, and California to harden points of entry through the building of barriers and other relevant activities.

If you’re tired of the same song options Universal Studios’ Rip Ride RockIt coaster offers for you to listen to during the 97-second ride, there are over 60 more songs you can listen to while you soar through the sky.

You can access a secret playlist by holding down the ride logo on the touch screen when you sit down.

The moment you get on the ride, hold down the ride logo on the touch screen to access the secret playlist. If done correctly, you should see a keypad appear. You can then enter a three digit code to listen to tunes ranging from Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” (Code: 306) to Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song.” (Code: 113)

You just need to do some homework ahead of time and know the code you’ll want to use. You can view the full list of secret songs here and read detailed instructions on how to access the music list here.

If you’re a “Fast & Furious” fan, make your way slowly through the ride’s queue.

The “Fast & Furious: Supercharged” ride, which opened in April, is full of a lot of nods to the movies and previous rides. One of our favorites is a tribute to Paul Walker, who played Dominic Toretto’s brother-in-law and race buddy. He died in a car crash in November 2013.

As you enter the queue, a Corona bottle lying on its side is knocked over in remembrance of Walker.

You can read about more Easter eggs you may miss on the “Fast & Furious” attraction here.

If you’re a “Harry Potter” fan, you’re going to want to make a pit stop at “Fast & Furious: Supercharged.”

On the single rider queue is a trophy case displaying title deeds and keys to famous fictional cars, including Bo Darville’s Pontiac Trans Am in “Smokey and the Bandit” and Doc Brown’s DeLorean keys from “Back to the Future.”

At the bottom right-hand corner of the display case is the title deed to Arthur Weasley’s 1962 Ford Anglia 105E Deluxe. That’s the car Ron Weasley and Harry Potter steal in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.” Next to the deed are the keys with a rubber chicken attached on the key ring.

You can read more on how to find the “Harry Potter” Easter egg here.

Try to avoid being in the very front or all the way to the left “Fast and Furious” ride.

A VIP tour guide told me the best seats on Supercharged were one of the last two rows of the first party bus and that you should aim to sit more toward the middle or right side.

You don’t get to pick the row you’re assigned to, but if you’re in the very front, the illusion of the ride starts to fade. You may be pulled out of the magic of the ride a bit as you’re able to see the edges of the large screens on either side of you and the roof of the warehouse building you’re inside.

If you sit too far to the left, you’ll find yourself craning and stretching your neck over other heads to try and see what’s going on. If you’ve been on the ride before, this isn’t so much of a problem, but if it’s your first time on the ride, that’s not where you want to sit to get the best view.

The best coaster to go on at sunset is the Hulk at Islands of Adventure.

This was what a Universal employee recommended to me because it hangs a bit over the water at Islands of Adventure. When you’re on the ride, you’ll face the direction in which the sun sets.

If you’re not riding a coaster at sunset, capture the perfect photo of the Hogwarts castle near the Islands of Adventure park entrance.

Head to the edge of the Port of Entry near the park’s entrance to get this shot. You can find it on the park’s map here.

The best seat to ride Skull Island: Reign of Kong is the ninth or 10th row.

Again, don’t go for the front. Why? I was told you’ll see the most of Kong at the ride’s very end of the Islands of Adventure ride.

If you need a break from some of the more intense rides, head to the Dr. Seuss area at Islands of Adventure.

If you’re older, you probably march straight through it on your way to the “Harry Potter” part of the park. But you’d miss views like this.

If you can’t do roller coasters back-to-back or if the heat starts to get to you, rest your head and cool down on The High in the Sky Suess Trolley Train Ride. Yes, it’s a kiddie ride, but, honestly, it reminds us of Disney World’s PeopleMover. It’s a relaxing tour around the Seuss Landing area of the park.

The best part is that it’s kind of nestled away in the Seuss Landing area of the park and never really has too long of a wait. Plus, you get some good photo ops of the park. It’s worth noting that the trolley train moves along different tracks. So it’s worth heading back for different experiences.

Sometimes, the train heads through the Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous so you may get to head through a restaurant and look at guests below.

Don’t pay for the squirt guns to spray riders in Toon Lagoon. There are free ones if you know where to look.

In Toon Lagoon, there are a number of inexpensive coin-operated squirt guns to spray water at unsuspecting riders on Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges and Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls.

If you don’t have some coins on you, head over to the Me Ship, The Olive and you’ll find some non-stationary water cannons you can use for free.

Need a place to get away from all of the noise? Head to Sweethaven in the Popeye area of Toon Lagoon.

It’s easy to pass by the Popeye area in Toon Lagoon. The main road will take you straight to the Skull Island attraction. But if you stay in Toon Lagoon, there’s a little walkway tucked deep in the park just behind Me Ship, The Olive.

It’s not a spot where you would think to go. The giant ship is a playground for kids. Head on past that and there’s a nice lookout spot where you can view the rest of the park.

There’s a nod to the old Twister attraction outside Jimmy Fallon’s ride.

This is easy to miss since you wouldn’t have much reason to walk past the entrance door to the Jimmy Fallon ride.

When Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon opened at Universal Studios in 2017, it replaced the park’s Twister ride. Before you head into the attraction, walk past the door to a display window showcasing a bunch of old knick-knacks.

Eagle-eyed fans may spot an ad for Twister cola to the far left on a back wall.

While you’re on the ride, look for Fallon’s family.

During the first checkpoint of Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon, look to the left and you’ll see Fallon’s wife and kids off to the left. It’s a quick moment and easy to miss if you don’t know where to look.

There’s a giant interactive element on The Mummy ride queue to spook guests.

Here’s the box where you need to place your hand.

Early on in the Mummy ride you’ll come across a giant chest in the middle of a room. It’s not obvious in the dark room, but there are two different locations to place hands.

A sign nearby reads, “Evil By One Hand Protection By Two.” If a park guest places one hand out of curiosity on the box, you’ll “unleash evil” in the room. That evil consists of a burst of air spraying from the ground at some unsuspecting people in line.

If two people place their hands on different parts of the box at the same exact time, a symbol of the Medjai, protective warriors, appears on the ceiling. It may take a few times to get just right. No one seemed to know about this when I visited, so it’s a good one to try out.

There’s another pathway to get into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter that isn’t always open.

Head there to snap a different angle of Hogsmeade.

Kirsten Acuna/INSIDER

A lot of guests head over the bridge from the “Jurassic Park” section to get to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and snag the perfect castle photo, but there’s a parallel bridge across the way that’s usually less crowded.

You can get to it from behind the Jurassic Park Discovery Center, but there’s a catch.

It’s usually accessible to park employees, but when the area becomes too crowded it’s opened up to guests. It’s one of those pathways that’s good to know about because the bridge doesn’t even show up on the park’s official map.

If you have a postcard or letter handy, you can get a stamp of Hogsmeade on it for free.

Here’s how the postmark looks. And, yes, you can drop your mail off right there to be sent off.

In Islands of Adventure, head underneath the owl post in Hogsmeade. Right outside the Dervish and Banges store, there’s a table set up with a Universal employee where you can go to get a special Hogsmeade postmark. All you have to do is ask.

Head to the bathrooms in Diagon Alley and you’re guaranteed to get a kick out of the lock on the doors.

I usually try to avoid the public restrooms at theme parks, but this small detail made me smile.

Kirsten Acuna/INSIDER

The amount of attention to detail in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is so immense that we shouldn’t have been surprised to find the locks on the bathroom doors are tiny vault handles. It’s the perfect nod to the enormous Gringotts bank a few doors down where wizards head to visit their bank vaults.

That’s not it. The best part is that the tiny spokes actually turn.

How to get into Diagon Alley faster: Stay on Universal property to get into the parks an hour earlier and ride the Hogwarts Express during the 7 a.m. hour.

This may seem like an obvious decision, since staying on Universal property allows you to get into the parks an hour earlier, but there’s a twist.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is scattered across two of Universal Orlando Resort’s parks, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure (IOA). Universal Studios, which houses the Hogwarts castle, Hogsmeade, and Flight of the Hippogriff, opens daily at 8 a.m. IOA opens one hour later and is home to Diagon Alley and the popular Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts attraction.

If you’re staying at a Universal resort, you can access those parks at 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., respectively. However, if you know your way around Universal Studios, you can get into IOA before 8 a.m. You just can’t go through the main entrance.

The Hogwarts Express connects the two parks and guests can ride the train as long as they have a two-park ticket. This is your key to getting into Diagon Alley earlier.

What to do: Get to Universal’s IOA at 7 a.m. and head right to the Hogwarts Express. As long as you have a park-to-park ticket, you’ll be able to ride the train over to Universal Studios, which doesn’t open for another hour. Once you arrive, you’ll be able to line up to wait to get into Diagon Alley before most other parkgoers.

I tested this out on a family trip in 2014 right after Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts opened in Universal Studios. Right at 8 a.m., we were allowed inside Diagon Alley as others were just entering the park’s main entrance. It was still a 90-minute wait for me at this time, a few short weeks after the attraction opened, but it was much better than the six-hour waits the ride had during its busiest times of day.

You’ll want to keep these tips in mind as a new Harry Potter attraction is set to open at Universal Islands of Adventure in 2019.

If you want a sneak peek at the new Harry Potter coaster coming to the parks, head to Doctor Doom’s Fear Fall in Islands of Adventure.

Ask a park worker if you can sit on a side with a park view. Not only do you get a nice bird’s-eye view of Islands of Adventure, but if you look toward the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, it’s the best view of the construction taking place on the park’s new coaster.
