  • The London Bridge knife attacker from Friday’s incident, Usman Khan, previously claimed in a letter that he wanted to attend a deradicalization course while he was serving a prison sentence for terrorism related charges in 2012.
  • In the letter obtained by ITV, Khan wrote that he wanted to live his life as a “good Muslim and also a good citizen of Britain.”
  • He also wrote that he didn’t carry the views that led to his arrest after becoming more mature in prison.
  • Seven years later, Khan killed two people and wounded three with a knife at London Bridge.
  • The Islamic State group has claimed that Khan was one the group’s soldiers, but has offered no proof to back up its claim.

The deceased London Bridge knife attacker Usman Khan wrote a letter in 2012 asking to take part in a deradicalization course while he was serving a prison sentence for terrorism related charges, according to ITV, which obtained a copy of the letter.

In the letter, Khan said he wanted to take a course offered by the Home Office to “prove to the authorities, my family, and soicity [sic] in general that I don’t carry the views I had before my arrest.”

He also claimed that he was “immature” before his arrest and that he had become more mature while serving his prison sentence, and that he wanted to live his life as a “good Muslim and also a good citizen of Britain.”

Seven years later, on Friday afternoon, Khan stabbed and killed two people and wounded three others on London Bridge before he was constrained by bystanders with whatever tools were available, including fire extinguishers and a narwhal tusk. When police arrived at the scene, Khan was shot and killed. He was wearing a fake suicide bomb vest, police said.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack on Saturday, claiming that Kahn was one of the group’s soldiers. ISIS did not offer any proof to back their claim.

The lawyer who represented Khan in 2012 told ITV that the events were “astonishing,” as Khan had seemingly rejected radical ideologies and violent extremism, and he understood that “it was wrong.”

Khan was known to the authorities due to a previous conviction involving a plot with a group of men to attack the London Stock Exchange, among other targets in 2010. Khan, who was 19 at the time, pleaded guilty to several charges, and he was first sentenced to eight years in prison until the sentence was increased to 16 years after an appeal.

Khan was eventually granted an early release on the agreement that he would wear an electronic monitoring tag.

At the time of the attack, Khan was wearing the electronic tag, according to The Guardian. He was invited on Friday to a prison rehabilitation conference at Fishmonger’s Hall, on the north side of London Bridge, which is where the attack began.

Boris Johnson said UK’s poorest communities are made-up of ‘chavs,’ ‘burglars,’ ‘drug addicts,’ and ‘losers’

  • Boris Johnson wrote that Britain’s poorest communities “[supply] us with the chavs, the losers, the burglars, the drug addicts…”
  • In a newspaper column from 2005 unearthed by Business Insider, Johnson claimed that the poorest 20% live on “run-down estates” and only vote for Labour in the “deluded hope of bigger hand-outs.”
  • Johnson also suggested in 2013 that economic inequality was inevitable due to lower intelligence among low-earners.
  • Labour’s David Lammy accused the prime minister of showing ‘disdain for working-class people.’
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

Boris Johnson wrote that the poorest 20% of British society is made-up of “chavs,” “losers,” “burglars,” “drug addicts,” and “criminals,” in a newspaper column unearthed by Business Insider.

Johnson, who was a Conservative MP and editor of the Spectator magazine at the time, wrote in the Telegraph in 2005 that poorer voters who live on “run-down estates,” only continued to vote for Labour due to the “deluded hope of bigger hand-outs.”

He added that this “bottom” one-fifth of British citizens “supplies us with the chavs, the losers, the burglars, the drug addicts and the 70,000 people who are lost in our prisons and learning nothing except how to become more effective criminals.”

In an aside aimed at his political opponents, he said that some Labour MPs only wanted to ban the smacking of children due to their “revulsion when they see a chav belting her kids in the supermarket.”

Earlier this week, it emerged that Johnson had labelled the children of single mothers “ill-raised, ignorant, aggressive and illegitimate,” and accused their fathers of being too “feeble” to “take control of [their] woman.”

Labour’s David Lammy told Business Insider that Johnson’s comments revealed a “disdain for working-class people across the UK.”

“Before becoming Prime Minister, Johnson used the privilege of high profile newspaper columns to spew bigoted abuse at Muslim women, black people, single mothers, working-class people and other groups.

“This history makes him unfit to be Prime Minister, especially at a time when our country is divided and desperately needs to come back together again.”

The Conservative Party were contacted for comment.

Poverty is caused by low intelligence

Johnson has also previously claimed that income inequality may be inevitable due to the lower intelligence of some poorer people.

“Whatever you may think of the value of IQ tests,” Johnson told the Centre for Policy Studies in 2013, “it is surely relevant to a conversation about inequality that as many as 16 per cent of our species have an IQ below 85 while about 2 per cent have an IQ above 130,”

Johnson argued that “I don’t believe that economic equality is possible” because “human beings who are far from equal in raw ability.”

Johnson refuses to apologise for offensive comments

Johnson has been dogged for decades by criticism about the offensive comments he has made about groups including Muslims, black people and gay people.

As Business Insider previously revealed, in a 1998 Telegraph column about Peter Mandelson’s resignation from the Labour government, Johnson said the announcement would lead to the blubbing of “tank-topped bumboys” in “the Ministry of Sound” nightclub, and “the soft-lit Soho drinking clubs frequented by Mandy and his pals.”

He added that Mandelson’s departure would cause the “lipstick” to come away from Blair’s government.

In a separate Telegraph column, Johnson also bewailed attempts to increase equality at the BBC for gay people.

“It must be a spoof,” he wrote.

“In my hand was a magazine from something called the BBC Resources Equal Opportunities Unit. There were letters from gays asking about their “partner’s” right to a BBC pension.”

In his 2001 book “Friends, Voters, Countrymen,” Johnson compared gay marriage to bestiality, writing that “if gay marriage was OK – and I was uncertain on the issue – then I saw no reason in principle why a union should not be consecrated between three men, as well as two men, or indeed three men and a dog.”

Asked about his record on Friday, Johnson refused to apologise and told LBC that his past comments had been taken out of context and were “absolute distortions” of what he had written.

“You just need to go back and look at the context,” he told LBC’s Nick Ferrari.

“So much of this stuff is disinterred with a view to distracting from the basic issues of this election.”

  2. LG 43″ Class FHD Smart LED HDR TV, $219.99 (originally $329.99) [You save $110] Is this the best TV out there? We’ll be honest: It’s not. But is it a good value for the price? The answer is yes. This entry-level LG TV features all the basics you’d want, like Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming apps built-in. Picture quality is clear but not mind-blowing, though you’ll be hard-pressed to something truly incredible on a TV this large for the same price. 3. Your savings overall are $100 – $70 off the price tag, and a $30 gift card with the purchase.
  5. As Seen on TV Power 7-Quart Air Fryer, $58.99 (originally $129.99) [You save $71] This $71 discount is the lowest deal we’ve seen so far, and the device functions not just as an air fryer, but also as a dehydrator, pizza oven, baking oven, roaster, or a good way to reheat foods.
  6. Dyson V8 Animal Cord-Free Vacuum $249.99 (originally $399.99) [You save $150] Whether you’re tackling carpeting, hardwood floors, ceilings, stairs, or even vehicles, the Dyson V8 Animal Cord-Free Vacuum is an excellent tool to have in your cleaning arsenal. You’ll find the same price at Dyson, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Best Buy.
  7. Instant Pot Duo Nova 6 quart 7-in-1, $55.21 (originally $99.99) with extra 15% off at checkout [You save $44.78] The Instant Pot Duo is our favorite multicooker. It’s a super-easy way to prepare quick meals and can accommodate ribs, soups, beans, rice, poultry, yogurt, desserts, and pretty much anything else you might be craving. You’ll find it for the same price at Amazon and Kohl’s (plus an extra 15% off and $15 in Kohl’s Cash), but it also qualifies for Target’s 20%-off coupon being offered today to be used on a future shopping trip.
  8. Take 50% off select toys and buy-one-get-one 50% off on other toys Take up to 50% off the season’s best and newest toys, and Target is offering additional bonuses like a buy-two-get-one-free for Disney Frozen toys.
  9. Fujifilm Instax Mini 9, $50 + free $15 Target gift card (originally $70) [You save $20] The Fujifilm Instax Mini is a perennially popular holiday gift, and so it rarely sees as good of a discount. You’ll also find this price on Amazon and in a bundle at Kohl’s, which is also offering $15 in Kohl’s Cash and a 15%-off discount today any way you pay – though you’ll have fewer color options there.
  10. Xbox One S 1 TB Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order Bundle, $199.99 (originally $299.99) [You save $100, plus get a $40 gift card] The Xbox One S 1TB bundle comes with a wireless controller and the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Deluxe Edition game. The same deal is also available at GameStop, but it does not come with the additional $40 store gift card like it does from Target.

How we selected the best deals at Target:

  • We only chose products that meet our high standard of coverage, and that we’ve either used ourselves or researched carefully.
  • We compared the prices against other retailers like Amazon and Best Buy and only included the deals that are the same or better (not including promotional discounts that come from using certain credit cards).
  • All deals are at least 20% off, with the occasional exception for products that are rarely discounted or provide an outsized value.

Target Black Friday FAQs:

Does Target allow in-store pick-up?

Sometimes, but you may not want to count on it. There are certain items that will be eligible for in-store pick-up, but not likely everything you’ll want to buy.

What is Target’s return policy?

For items purchased from November 1 through December 25, the 30-day return period will start on December 26. As usual, RedCard holders have a longer returns window.

Is Target price-matching during Black Friday?

No. Target will price-match between its online and in-store prices, but not with competitors.

However, Target will likely keep prices as close to competitors as possible, and most major retailers tend to adjust prices throughout the day to remain competitive. You just won’t have 14 days to ask for a differential refund if you come across something lower.

Will RedCard holders still get 5% off purchases at Target on Black Friday?

Yes.

Are there any ways to save even more at Target on Black Friday?

As mentioned, it certainly doesn’t hurt to be a RedCard holder. They typically get early access to deals, and they get an extra 5% off their purchases. You’ll also get free shipping with no minimum. If you make purchases with a Target Debit Card, Credit Card, or Target Mastercard (all RedCards) you also get an additional 30 days to return a purchase.

The benefits may be slim in comparison, but it also doesn’t hurt to download the Target app. Retailers with apps are known to push specific coupons or exclusive discounts to those with it downloaded already or to incentivize downloads.

Target is offering incentives for shopping on Black Friday, too. Shoppers who spend $50 (in-store or online) on November 29 get a 20%-off coupon to redeem online or in stores December 3 through December 14.

  12. Best toy deal: Hover-1 Maverick Hoverboard, $98 (originally $128) [You save $30]

What makes these deals great:

  1. Vizio 60-inch Class V-Series 4K Smart TV, $448 (originally $568) [You save $120] The affordable TV features free and unlimited TV with WatchFree, built-in Chromecast, compatibility with Google Assistant and Siri, and more.
  2. LG 2.1 Soundbar, $99 (originally $199) [You save $100] This soundbar instantly enhances your entertainment viewing experience, for just under $100. With a compatible LG HDTV, it links up easily and wirelessly via Bluetooth.
  3. JBL Xtreme 2 Portable Wireless Bluetooth Speaker, $250 (originally $350) [You save $100] There are certainly more affordable portable Bluetooth speakers you can buy, but they often compromise on sound. The rugged JBL speaker has immersive stereo sound and impressive bass that make the $250 price worth it.
  4. Bose Soundsport Free Wireless Earbuds, $169 (originally $249) [You save $80] Despite the MSRP, the average price of these earbuds is actually $199. Still, you get to save a little extra today on these lightweight, secure, and durable earbuds.
  5. Apple iPad (6th Gen) 128GB Wi-Fi, $349 (originally $429) [You save $80] Best Buy and Target are also selling this 2018 model, sixth-generation iPad, but you’ll get the best Black Friday price at Walmart. It may not be the newest iPad, but it’s still the best one you can buy because it has nearly all the same features as the more expensive iPad Air – just an older processor. The sixth-gen iPad features a sharp screen, high-end metal design, Apple Pencil support, a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and a generous 128 GB storage.
  6. Google Home Mini, $19 (originally $49) [You save $30] The Google Home Mini is the most affordable way to incorporate Google Assistant into your home, and it’s even more affordable today. You can get news updates, check the weather, stream music, and much more. Even if you already own one, it’s worth adding another to a different room in your house at this price.
  7. KitchenAid Classic Plus Series 4.5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer, $199 (originally $279) [You save $80] If you’re a beginner baker on a budget, we recommend this mixer because it’s versatile, dependable, and quiet. Compared with other stand-mixer models (many of which are also on sale), it has the least powerful motor.
  8. Keurig K-Compact Single-Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker, $40 (originally $67) [You save $27] A reliable, efficient, and compact coffee maker under $50 is hard to come by. If there’s any coffee maker brand you can trust, it’s Keurig.
  9. iRobot Roomba 670 Vacuum, $197 (originally $330) [You save $133] The iRobot 670 is one of the brand’s best-sellers for good reason: It works on all types of surfaces, cleans thoroughly and efficiently, can be tracked through the corresponding app, and self charges. Compared with other robot vacuums, it’s on the lower end of the price spectrum, but it’s certainly well equipped. You can save $132 on it during Black Friday.
  10. Xbox One S 1TB All-Digital Edition 3-Game Bundle, $149 (originally $250) [You save $101] This is the lowest price you’ll see anywhere, and the deal is all the better because the bundle includes three must-own games: “Minecraft,” “Fortnite,” and “Sea of Thieves.”
  11. Slumber1 by Zinus 8-inch Mattress (Queen), $149 (originally $209) [You save $60] You’ll be hard-pressed to find a comfortable under-$200 Queen mattress anywhere else. Zinus specializes in affordable bedroom essentials, so we’re not surprised one of the best home deals this Black Friday comes from the brand. The mattress ships in a box so you don’t have to worry about inconvenient shipping or assembly.
  12. Hover-1 Maverick Hoverboard, $98 (originally $128) [You save $30] Your search for a Christmas gift is over thanks to this toy. Both parents and kids love its ease of use and durability, though you’ll also love it for its more affordable sale price.

How we selected the best deals at Walmart:

  • We chose only products that meet our high standard of coverage and that we’ve either used ourselves or researched carefully.
  • We compared prices with those at other retailers like Target and Amazon and included only the deals that were the same or better (not including promotional discounts that come from using certain credit cards).
  • All deals are at least 20% off, with the occasional exception for products that are rarely discounted or provide an outsize value.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the London Bridge knife terror attack

The Islamic State claimed responsibility on Saturday for the Friday London Bridge knife terror attack where two people were killed and three wounded, according to Reuters.

The Islamic State’s Amaq news agency said it was one of its soldiers who carried out the attack, but it hasn’t offered any proof.

The attack is a result of a call to action by the Islamic State to target the nations in the coalition fighting against the Islamic State, it said.

The attacker, 28-year-old Usman Khan was known to police before the attack, as he had a criminal record that included acts of terrorism.

Khan was previously part of a group of men charged in 2010 with plotting to attack the London Stock Exchange and later pleaded guilty to trying to raise money to build an Arabic educational institution in Kashmir that would provide firearms training.

The terrorist group previously claimed responsibility for a June 2017 attack that also occurred on London Bridge. Three attackers rammed a van into pedestrians on the bridge and stabbed several people in nearby Borough Market. Eight people were killed and at least 48 injured.
