President Donald Trump and his leading health advisers dealing with the novel coronavirus pandemic offered some grim statistics for Americans in the weeks ahead.

Statistical models showed that roughly 100,000 and 240,000 Americans could die from the disease – even if Americans observed the strict social distancing guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Trump’s coronavirus team.

Trump shifted his tone on Tuesday to reflect the new statistics. He previously described the novel coronavirus as seasonal influenza: “This is a flu. This is like a flu,” Trump said in late February.

“I want every American to be prepared for the hard days that lie ahead,” Trump said during a press conference at the White House on Tuesday. “We’re going to go through a very tough two weeks.”

Earlier worst-case scenario estimates predicted around 200,000 to 1.7 million deaths and between 160 million and 214 million infections in the US. As of Tuesday evening, there were over 184,343 cases and 3,796 deaths in the US.

“We really believe we can do a lot better than that,” Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus task force coordinator said during the briefing, adding that it was imperative for people to continue observing health guidelines despite a potential improvement in the near-term.

Birx stressed that there was “no magic bullet, there’s no magic vaccine or therapy” and that the proliferation of the disease depended on human behavior.

The forecasted 100,000 and 240,000 deaths is an alarming number when put into context with other pandemics and wars.

‘I will be watching carefully’: Elizabeth Warren just put the Treasury Department and Federal Reserve on notice about the $500 billion corporate bailout fund

  • Warren sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Tuesday, pressing them to ensure stimulus money for corporations is responsibly used.
  • “I will be watching carefully as you hand out these funds,” Warren wrote.
  • A battle is brewing among top Democrats and the Trump administration around oversight of a $500 billion corporate lending program.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren put Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on notice on Tuesday as efforts ramp up to administer a colossal $2 trillion stimulus law.

In a letter sent to both leaders, Warren pressed them to use their sway to ensure money lent to corporations under the recent stimulus package is responsibly used.

“The legislation gives you the authority to fill this gap: it gives you extraordinary powers to make discretionary decisions about the recipients of this huge bailout for big corporations, and the terms and conditions under which they receive aid,” Warren said in the letter.

She urged Mnuchin to reject aid for companies that have “long records of financial mismanagement or lawbreaking.”

Then the senator from Massachusetts issued a warning: “I will be watching carefully as you hand out these funds.”

Read more: Bank of America examined the stock market during every recession since 1929 and concluded the recent meltdown is not over. Here’s its trading strategy for a deeper crash.

Warren doubled down on her call to enact stricter conditions on companies that accept emergency federal funding to ensure it benefits workers instead of executives. They include using the money to keep workers on payrolls, barring stock buybacks, and curbing increases in executive pay.

The recent $2 trillion stimulus legislation Trump signed on Friday carves out $500 billion in taxpayer money for loans to large corporations. Mnuchin will oversee the fund.

The pot of money does carry restrictions for corporations and limits stock buybacks. Progressives, though, have panned it as inadequate.

A clash is already brewing between Democrats and the Trump administration around oversight of the program.

Senate Democrats also sent a letter to Mnuchin on Tuesday calling on the Treasury Secretary to appoint an independent inspector general “without delay,” The Washington Post reported. Under the stimulus law, the White House would appoint a person to fill the role and the Senate would confirm.

President Trump tried curbing oversight of the program shortly after signing the stimulus into law, releasing a memo saying the administration wouldn’t allow the inspector general to inform Congress without “presidential supervision.”

  • Palantir is providing the CDC with software to help it monitor the spread of COVID-19 and assess how hospitals are dealing with spikes in new cases, Forbes reported Tuesday.
  • Palantir’s software uses data from hospitals and public health agencies – such as test results, bed capacity, and ventilator supply – to give the CDC insight into where additional resources are needed, according to Forbes.
  • The tool resembles one Palantir built for the UK’s top health agency and has raised significant privacy concerns, with sources telling Forbes that, while it uses anonymized data currently, personally identifiable information could be used in the future.
  • Palantir, a secretive big data company, built has been slammed by critics for using its technology to assist ICE with tracking and deporting immigrants.

Big data firm Palantir is providing the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with software to help it monitor the coronavirus pandemic, Forbes reported Tuesday.

The tool uses data such as lab test results, hospital bed capacity, and ventilator supply, gathered from hospitals and health agencies, to help the CDC assess where the virus is spreading (or could spread to) and how best to allocate limited resources, according to Forbes.

While sources told Forbes the tool currently uses anonymized data, they also said personally identifiable information could be used in the future, raising significant privacy concerns.

Palantir, in partnership with Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, has built a similar tool for the UK’s National Healthcare Service, which relies on Palantir’s front-end software, Google’s data collection capabilities, and Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform. The BBC reported that Amazon is involved in the project too, although specific details were not given.

Palantir, which was last valued at $20 billion and counts Peter Thiel and the CIA among its investors, has a checkered history. The company operates under the radar and has come under fire from immigrant rights groups for its work helping Immigrations and Customs Enforcement track and deport immigrants. In late 2019, it took up a military contract with the Pentagon previously abandoned by Google after employees protested it was unethical.

“Palantir have a poor reputation, as engaging in activities which threaten personal privacy and may lead to other human rights abuses,” Jim Killock, executive director of UK pro-privacy organization Open Rights Group, said in a press statement last week.

Privacy concerns have come to the forefront amid the coronavirus pandemic, with tech companies like Palantir, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Zoom, and others eager to offer technology solutions despite potential worries about how data will be used or shared, especially after the immediate need for COVID-19 surveillance subsides.

Palantir, the CDC, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon could not immediately be reached for comment.

Shaquille O’Neal says he stopped visiting the zoo from ‘Tiger King’ after learning Joe Exotic was ‘involved with all the stuff’

NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal made a fairly surprising cameo in the first episode of Netflix’s documentary series “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness,” leading some fans to question the extent of his relationship with the now-infamous Joe Exotic.

The show, which gives viewers an inside look at the culture of a private zoo, features Joe Exotic, real name Joseph Maldonado-Passage, as its centerpiece in a wide cast of unbelievable, yet compelling, real-life characters. But with Exotic currently serving a 22-year federal prison sentence on two counts of murder-for-hire and 17 charges of animal abuse, some basketball fans were left wondering how close O’Neal was with him.

On his podcast, “The Big Podcast with Shaq,” O’Neal explained that while he was a fan of tigers, he was not close to Exotic himself. O’Neal said his first encounter with Exotic came out of curiosity after seeing a sign for a tiger sanctuary while driving between Dallas and Oklahoma City.

“So we go in there, and it’s a beautiful place, and the character that was there was Exotic Joe,” O’Neal said. “We’re there, and I dropped some donations for the tigers’ foods and all that. We take pictures with [the] tigers. We went back a couple times. Then we go back another time, and we found out that he’s involved with all the stuff, and then, actually, I stopped going.”

“I don’t harm tigers,” O’Neal said. “I love tigers. I love white tigers. Do I put donations to these zoos to help these tigers out? I do it all the time. Do I own tigers personally at my house? No. But I love tigers. Listen, people are going to make their own opinions, but again, I was just a visitor. I met this guy – not my friend. Don’t know him. Never had any business dealings with him, and I had no idea any of that stuff was going on.”

Shaq is a larger than life character in his own right, but for basketball fans, it’s likely comforting news that his relationship with Joe Exotic was minimal.

The US Navy is trying to get sailors off the aircraft carrier hit by a coronavirus outbreak, but it is having trouble finding enough beds

  • Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly told CNN Tuesday that the service was trying to get sailors off the USS Theodore Roosevelt, a deployed aircraft carrier that was forced into port in Guam by a coronavirus outbreak on board.
  • The first few cases were reported last week, and since then, the number of cases on the carrier has spiked.
  • “We’ve been working the past several days to get those sailors off the ship and to get them into accommodations in Guam,” Modly said Tuesday, adding that the challenge is finding beds for the many sailors on the ship.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

The acting Navy secretary said Tuesday that the service is responding to a coronavirus outbreak aboard a deployed aircraft carrier and working to get sailors ashore and clean the ship, but it is not an easy process.

The first few cases aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt were reported last week. Since then, the number of cases has spiked, with some outlets reporting that more than 100 sailors may have the coronavirus.

Capt. Brett Crozier, the aircraft carrier’s commanding officer, wrote a letter to Navy leaders Monday warning of a worsening situation aboard the ship and calling on the Navy to take decisive action to get sailors off it as soon as possible, the San Francisco Chronicle first reported.

“Sailors do not need to die. If we do not act now, we are failing to properly take care of our most trusted asset – our Sailors,” he wrote, urging the Navy to take as much as 90 percent of the crew off the ship.

Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly told CNN on Tuesday the service is not in disagreement with the commanding officer and is working to get sailors ashore.

“We’ve been working the past several days to get those sailors off the ship and to get them into accommodations in Guam,” he said, explaining that “the problem is that Guam doesn’t have enough beds right now.”

“We’re having to talk to the government there to see if we can get some hotel space or create some tent-type facilities there,” he added.

There are other challenges as well.

He said that unlike a cruise ship, a Navy aircraft carrier cannot simply be emptied out entirely. There have to be people on board to manage essential systems. A Nimitz-class carrier has armaments and aircraft, nuclear reactors, and other complex systems.

“The key is to make sure that we can get a set of crew members that can man all those critical functions on the ship, make sure they’re clean, get them back on, clean the ship, and get the other crew members off,” Modly said. “That’s the process we’re going through. It’s very methodical. We are absolutely accelerating it as we go.”

He told MSNBC Tuesday that around 1,000 sailors have already left the ship.

US Pacific Fleet Adm. J.C. Aquilino told reporters Tuesday afternoon that the Navy will not remove all sailors from the ship, explaining that “there will be sailors on the ship, in quarantine, in isolation, in testing throughout this process.”

The admiral did not clarify what he considered to be the smallest acceptable crew size.

The Navy is also working to test all of the about 5,000 sailors on the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Modly said the initial testing capacity was 200 tests per day, which means the Navy would need roughly 25 days to complete the testing process.

The Navy is trying to speed that process up with additional testing support, the acting secretary said.

Modly characterized the situation as a balancing act. “We all have one mission, and that’s to defend the nation. This is a unique circumstance and we’re working through it,” he told CNN.

Update: This post has been updated with US Pacific Fleet Adm. J.C. Aquilino’s comments.

The best dog dewormers

  • The best dewormer for dogs should treat four of the most common intestinal parasites in dogs, and it should be easy to administer.
  • Guaranteed to treat multiple species of hookworm, roundworm, tapeworm, and whipworm, Safe-Guard 4 Canine Dewormer is our top pick for the best dog dewormer overall.

Intestinal parasites are extremely common in dogs of all ages, and most can’t be seen with the naked eye, which means you might not know if your dog is infected.

Four different types of worms commonly infect dogs and puppies: roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, and whipworms. Puppies are also commonly infected with a single-cell intestinal parasite known as coccidian. Adult dogs can become infected with coccidia as well, but many dogs develop an immunity to these parasites.

Dogs can become infected with intestinal parasites in different ways. Puppies often become infected with roundworms prior to birth or when nursing from their mother. Tapeworms can be transmitted if a dog swallows an infected flea (treating flea infestations goes hand in hand with treating tapeworm infections). Dogs can pick up hookworms and whipworms from their environment, often from the feces of infected dogs, or contaminated soil or water.

Some of the most common symptoms of worms in dogs included digestive upset (vomiting or diarrhea), gas, bloated belly (pot-bellied appearance), increased appetite, unexplained weight loss, weakness, and bloody stool or diarrhea. In puppies especially, intestinal parasite infections can cause anemia and poor growth.

If you suspect that your dog might have worms, bring him to the veterinarian for a physical exam and fecal test. Treatment is generally easy with over-the-counter dewormers for dogs. Some worms can be transmitted to humans (children are especially vulnerable), so it’s important to keep your dog parasite free.

When choosing a dewormer for dogs, you need to know what type of worms your dog has, which is why the veterinary exam is so important. You can purchase a dewormer for specific types of worms, or you can choose a broad-spectrum product that kills many different types of worms. Dewormers for dogs come in several forms including tablets, granules, powders, and liquids, so talk to your veterinarian about the option that is best for your dog. Once you know what kind of dewormer you need, take a look at our top picks for the best non-prescription dewormer for dogs.

With pyrantel pamoate as the powerful active ingredient, Nemex-2 Liquid Dewormer is a safe and effective treatment for roundworms and hookworms in dogs and puppies as young as 2 weeks of age.

Many dogs dislike taking tablets and even powdered dewormers may be difficult to disguise in your dog’s food. If you’re looking for an alternative, a liquid dewormer might be a good option. Nemex 2 Liquid Dewormer for Dogs is our top pick because it is approved to treat roundworms and hookworms in dogs and comes in an easy-to-administer liquid.

Nemex 2 Liquid Dewormer for Dogs only treats roundworms and hookworms, so if your dog has tapeworms or whipworms, this medication will not be effective. The active ingredient pyrantel pamoate is highly effective and widely recognized as safe. Simply add the liquid to your dog’s food or feed it directly by mouth. One treatment should kill all worms. Follow up with a fecal test from your veterinarian to make sure the worms have been eliminated.

The Durvet Tripler Wormer for Medium and Large Dogs is an effective option for big dogs.

Arielle Charnas, the influencer behind the fashion blog “Something Navy,” is sparking more controversy online after leaving New York City for the Hamptons in the wake of her positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

Charnas first received backlash when she shared her health journey with her 1.3 million followers, posting an Instagram story in which received flu and COVID-19 test swabs from a doctor friend – despite telling her followers that she did not qualify for one of the limited tests.

“THE LATEST COOL NEW PERK FOR INFLUENCERS – getting tested quickly for coronavirus, while everyone else waits,” New York Times Reporter Kenenth Vogel tweeted in response.

“Still fuming that something navy went and used one of the like 5 tests we have,” Twitter user @alainapol22 wrote in a post.

“Influencers are always getting everything first,” writer Michael Williams added.

Later that day, Charnas told her followers via an Instagram post that she would no longer be sharing content about her health, and she would continue to post her typical lifestyle content.

It’s been 4 days since I started feeling incredibly sick. Each day the symptoms evolve into something else and while I can’t imagine how I’d ever catch coronavirus (from what I know I haven’t been in contact with anyone who has it) I’m dealing with the weirdest virus I’ve ever had since mono. I’m so happy my fever is gone but the body pain that I’m feeling today is unlike anything else. It feels like we’re all in a bad dream right now but I’m determined to bring back some normalcy to our lives. This is the last time I’m going to talk about feeling sick right now on my Instagram and move on to the things that make me happy, like my kids, family life, fashion and work. If it offends anyone or seems as though I’m being insensitive during this time, I’m sorry but it’s what I’ve chosen to do. Back to regular content/programming. Can’t wait to post my partnerships and my outfits from inside my apt every day. I promise they will be better than this one ???? – love you all, stay home and stay healthy!

A post shared by Arielle Charnas (@ariellecharnas) on

A day later, however, Charnas posted a follow-up note in which she revealed that she’d tested positive for COVID-19.

In the post, she addressed her access to the limited COVID-19 tests, writing that she was “lucky,” and widespread access to care should be a “#1 priority.”

Since testing positive for COVID-19, she’s continued to update her followers on her activities via Instagram and TikTok – prompting more criticism.

Charnas’ Instagram posts, stories, and TikTok videos since getting diagnosed reveal that she spent time with her family in their Manhattan apartment before leaving the city to recover in a Hamptons rental home. Posts on Charnas’ Instagram show her taking walks outside with her daughter and posing in front of a Hamptons rental home with the caption “fresh air.”

The decision to leave New York before 14 days of quarantine – the recommended period of time for those exposed to the virus – had passed received swift backlash online from commenters calling the decision “selfish” and “disappointing.”

A Twitter thread by writer Sophie Ross documents and critiques Charnas’ activity since the positive diagnosis.

“[Charnas] literally LEFT her palatial manhattan apartment so she could get Hamptons content,” Ross wrote.

“As a nurse, I’m super bummed you couldn’t stay quarantined for the whole 14 days past positive testing,” one follower wrote in a comment before the comments feature was turned off on the post. “Your privilege does not excuse you from following simple rules to contain yourself. And you influence a lot of young people.”

“Do you realize you have a very contagious and, for many, deadly disease? Do you realize that going out and about puts at risk, let’s say, the people in your building that need to take the elevator after you?” another added. “Do you realize this is not the best message?”

Charnas did not return Insider’s request for comment.

New York Gov. Cuomo says it’s ‘not likely’ recreational marijuana will be legalized in New York’s budget this year as the coronavirus outbreak is the focus in Albany

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that legalizing recreational marijuana likely won’t be included in the state’s budget, dealing a blow to the cannabis industry companies that have invested a significant amount of time, money, and resources preparing for the rush of the state’s millions of adult consumers into the legalized market.

Cuomo was asked by a reporter on Tuesday about marijuana legalization – one of the key initiatives he laid out in his budget address on January 21 – in his daily press briefing on the state’s coronavirus response.

“It’s not likely,” Cuomo said. “Too much, too little time.”

The New York state budget is due on April 1. The state legislature must approve the package before midnight.

In normal times, the state budget is seen by lawmakers as a way to eschew the traditional, intensive process that bills must go through to become law by forcing key issues into the budget.

Last week, Cuomo said he was still intent on legalizing marijuana through the budget, but those priorities have shifted as confirmed cases of coronavirus and deaths mount in New York state. New York City has emerged as the epicenter of the global coronavirus pandemic in recent days, with one person dying as a result of the virus approximately every six minutes.

New York exceeded 75,000 cases on Tuesday, with 1,550 deaths – up from 1,218 on Monday, Cuomo said.

New York state Democrats had tried to put adult-use cannabis legalization in last year’s budget, but negotiations broke down shortly before the deadline over how the tax revenue from marijuana sales would be spent.

Many in the cannabis industry were hopeful New York would pass legalization this year. Legalizing adult-use cannabis would provide a rare positive tailwind for an industry that has seen a wave of layoffs and executive turnover, and had the market caps of some of its most visible companies slashed by over 90% in recent months.

Justin Flagg, the spokesperson for Sen. Liz Krueger, who, along with Rep. Crystal Peoples-Stokes, is one of the key voices on marijuana legalization in the New York state assembly, told Cannabis Wire the “plan B remains the same.”

“If it can’t get done in the budget in the middle of a public health crisis that is also a fiscal crisis, there is no reason the legislature can’t negotiate and pass a nation-leading legalization model when the immediate crisis is over,” Flagg said.

Cannabis is legal for adults over the age of 21 in 11 states, and a total of 33 states have some form of medical cannabis access on the books.

  • There are new rules to the San Francisco Bay Area shelter-in-place order designed to curb the coronavirus outbreak so the healthcare system is not overwhelmed.
  • Residents will no longer be able to access playgrounds, public picnic areas, or dog parks, and funerals must not exceed 10 people.
  • The new restrictions came as city officials across the region announced that the order, originally slated to end on April 7, would be extended to May 3.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

City officials across the San Francisco Bay Area introduced new rules for residents as news came of an extended regionwide shelter-in-place order that will now run through April, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Residents will no longer be able to frequent playgrounds, dog parks, public picnic areas, or other recreational areas. Golf courses, tennis and basketball courts, swimming pools, and rock-climbing walls must close. Any sport that requires people to share a ball must be played only among members of the same household. Essential businesses must implement social-distancing protocols by April 3.

The new restrictions are intended to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Residential and commercial construction will be prohibited, with exceptions for affordable-housing facilities, and funerals must not exceed 10 people.

“We are bending the curve,” Dr. Sara Cody, the Santa Clara County public-health officer, said at a Tuesday news conference, according to KTVU. “But it’s not enough.”

These are additional restrictions to what officials originally announced on March 16, when news of the order was made public. At the time, specific public areas were not ordered to close, and residents were not directed to steer clear of them. But after the first weekend of the shelter-in-place order saw mass outings to the region’s open spaces, city leaders reiterated to residents the importance of social distancing. Parking areas at public parks across San Francisco were closed as a result.

Residents, however, can still leave their homes for essential needs, such as for groceries or walks outside, but are asked to limit the number of unnecessary trips and stay close to home.

The region, as well as other parts of the US, is gearing up for an expected surge in coronavirus cases as the number of confirmed cases hit 2,308 in the Bay Area, with 59 reported deaths.

Hospitalizations and deaths continue to rise, but some local health officials say the shelter-in-place order and the enforcement of social distancing may be working. The region, as well as the entire state of California, is attempting to avoid a situation similar to New York’s, where officials didn’t enforce a stay-at-home order until five days after the Bay Area did. The state of New York now has 75,795 confirmed cases, with at least 1,550 deaths.

The Bay Area shutdown is still not a full lockdown like the one Italy has implemented – residents do not have to have government permission to leave their homes. Violations of the order’s restrictions are also still punishable by fines or citations, but law enforcement is still relying on resident compliance.

The order affects six Bay Area counties as well as the city of Berkeley.

I tried storing my food with Bee’s Wrap and now I want to wrap everything in beeswax

Bee’s Wrap

  • Plastic wrap safely seals food so you can save it for later, but like all single-use plastics, it’s bad for the environment.
  • Bee’s Wrap is an eco-friendly alternative that’s made from organic cotton coated in bee’s wax, jojoba oil, and tree resin.
  • It’s compostable and biodegradable, so when you can’t reuse it anymore, it’s safe to dispose of.
  • I decided to try Bee’s Wrap even though it is expensive at $18 for three sheets, and I’m done with plastic wrap for good.

I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, so needless to say, I’m constantly trying to figure out how to best store my produce. From glass and plastic containers to aluminum foil and Saran wrap, I thought I had tried just about everything until I heard about Bee’s Wrap.

I initially hesitated because of the cost: $18 for what are essentially three sheets of beeswax. But, knowing that it’s an environmentally friendly and sustainable option, I finally decided to give it a try. Here’s why I won’t go back.

What is Bee’s Wrap?

Think of it as a food wrapper that you can wash, reuse, and eventually recycle. Bee’s Wrap is made exclusively from sustainable products: beeswax, jojoba oil, tree resin, and organic cotton. The first and most important ingredient is sourced from sustainably managed hives, and Bee’s Wrap’s biodegradable packaging is made from 100% recycled paper.

Some more impressive credentials: The Global Organic Textile Standard has certified the company’s fabric and printing process, and Bee’s Wrap is a Green America certified corporation, as well as a B Corporation.

What really makes Bee’s Wrap eco-friendly is the fact that you can reuse the sheets for up to a year. They eventually start to lose their sticking power, but when that happens you can compost them or wrap them around kindling and use them as fire starters.

How big is each Bee’s Wrap sheet?

You can buy a variety pack that includes three sizes:

  • Small (7″ x 8″)
  • Medium (10″ x 11″)
  • Large (13″ x 14″)

Bee’s Wrap offers special wraps for bread and sandwiches too. Plus, since the wraps are made of wax, you can easily cut them to suit your needs.

How does it work?

The wraps seal with the warmth of your hands as you press and wrap them around your food. It takes a few tries to get a feel for how much pressure to use and how many seconds to press down.

Bee’s Wrap sheets do get softer over time, and I have to admit I’m skeptical that mine will last for an entire year.

How produce looks after a week in Bee’s Wrap

I opted for a variety pack with three sheet sizes. I used my small pieces (7″ x 8″) to wrap half an avocado, half an onion, and half a lime. The medium pieces (10″ x 11″) were just the right size to wrap bigger vegetables like cucumbers and bell peppers. I didn’t have much use for the large pieces (13″ x 14″), so I cut them down to store produce like Serrano peppers and apples.

I was surprised at how well my avocado kept in the wrap after a few days; while it turned light brown, it didn’t go bad. I stored the lime and onion in Bee’s Wrap for about a week and though the lime was slightly dried out, it still had a significant amount of juice. The onion was in great condition, and the rest of my produce remained crisp days later.

How does it compare to other food storage methods?

I do think Bee’s Wrap keeps food fresher than plastic wrap or aluminum foil. I definitely noticed that my peppers lasted longer and were crisper when I stored them in Bee’s Wrap, and, as I mentioned earlier, I was surprised that my avocado only browned slightly after being in the fridge for a few days.

However, I don’t think Bee’s Wrap seals in freshness as well as glass containers. When I stored homemade fresh salsa in a bowl covered with Bee’s Wrap, it dried out faster than it does when I keep it in a tightly-sealed glass container. But, for the most part, I use glass containers for meal prep and Bee’s Wrap for storing cut produce that I want to use later.

I should note that the company doesn’t recommend using the wraps for raw meat. Apparently, you can freeze items with Bee’s Wrap, but I haven’t put this to the test yet.

How do you clean it?

Cleaning Bee’s Wrap is easy – I use a tiny bit of soap and wipe each sheet with a sponge before running it under cold water (hot water will melt the wax). While the company sells a special drying rack, I find that my dish rack works just fine.

You may run into some issues with staining; a red onion left little purple marks on one of my sheets, but it eventually disappeared after a few cleanings.

Let’s talk about the smell

When you first open a box of Bee’s Wrap, the smell is very strong. I’m sensitive to scents, so this did bother me; it took a week or two for me not to notice the smell every time I walked into my kitchen.

Even after a month or so of using and washing the wraps, you can still smell the wax – it’s just fainter. Thankfully, the smell doesn’t seem to rub off on food.

The verdict

I have been using Bee’s Wrap for a few months, and my sheets are still holding up. They are much softer because I use them a lot, so I am still skeptical that these will make it an entire year. For now, they still seal tightly.

I really don’t feel the need to use plastic wrap or aluminum foil for food storage, as Bee’s Wrap seems to keep produce fresher. I also love the fact that you can compost it when it wears out. I don’t think I’ll be tossing my glass containers just yet, though – while Bee’s Wrap is great for storing individual items, it’s not the best choice for large batches of leftovers or meal prep.
