The 1MDB saga is about to get some fresh new attention – this time, on the big screen.
Billion Dollar Whale, a tell-all book based on the saga, and specifically on Malaysian businessman Jho Low, is set to become the basis of a new movie, and Ipoh-born actress Michelle Yeoh is reportedly a producer on the film.
According to Star2, the Crazy Rich Asians star has signed a deal to produce movies with SK Global’s Ivanhoe Pictures. The movie on Billion Dollar Whale could become her first project under the partnership.
Billion Dollar Whale grabbed headlines for detailing interviews with newsmakers and sources related to Jho Low and the 1MDB controversy.
In the book, Wall Street Journal reporters Tom Wright and Bradley Hope offer unprecedented insight into how the saga could have first began and developed.
Low is widely considered a key figure in the saga, which has also involved A-list celebrities Leonardo DiCaprio and Miranda Kerr, and even the 2013 movie The Wolf of Wall Street.
The 36-year-old businessman has denied allegations made against him, and recently called the book “one of three recently and hastily published books, with the authors attempting to write ‘instant history,’ without the benefit of evidence and before the issues have even begun to be resolved“.
“In fact, Mr. Low seems to disappear from the narrative when any of the alleged fraud occurs, only to then be accused – without any evidence – of having been responsible for it,” a statement on his website read.
The statement also said the book featured “allegations disguised as fact and gossip passed off as legitimate reporting”.
