  • Apple News now has a section dedicated to news about the midterm elections in the United States.
  • It will have exclusive features from The Washington Post, Axios, and Politico.
  • It will also present coverage from Fox News, Vox, and other publishers.
  • Publishers have warmed up to Apple News in recent months after it started to drive more traffic.

A new focused section in the Apple News app highlights “fact-based stories” about the coming US midterm elections, Apple announced on Monday.

Though Apple is not producing news, it says it will publish “exclusive features” from outlets such as The Washington Post, Axios, and Politico. Apple also said it would present coverage from Fox News, Vox, and other publishers.

“When the loudest, most extreme voices dominate the conversation, we can’t hear each other,” Apple News’s editor-in-chief, Lauren Kern, wrote in an introductory note. “At Apple News, we want to help fix that.”

“We’ll always steer clear of rumor and propaganda,” Kern continued.

Apple News is a default app on iPhones sold in the US. It focuses mainly on distributing a curated feed of stories from publisher websites, though it has published a few exclusives, including an excerpt of Sen. John McCain’s memoir “The Restless Wave.”

Some publishers have been bullish on Apple News recently after it started to drive more traffic and gave outlets more control over ad sales.

The new section is prominently displayed in a banner at the top of the Apple News app and will also be available through the Top Stories and Spotlight tabs, Apple said on Monday.

On Monday, the tab displayed Kern’s welcome note as well as an “exclusive” newsletter by the Axios cofounder Mike Allen focusing on the “2018 Swing Voter.”
