- A lot of sleep companies claim to make life-changing products, like much of what’s targeted to cool off hot sleepers for a better night’s sleep.
- I was extremely surprised by Helix‘s new Cool Pillow, which uses a fabric with high heat transfer to remain consistently cool.
- It always felt like I had just picked it up off my drafty, cold windowsill even when in the same pile of my other pillows.
- In my opinion, it’s the best temperature-regulating pillow on the market and competitively priced at $115.
When I heard about a new pillow from a popular mattress startup that was supposed to literally feel “cold to the touch,” I didn’t respond with what you’d call enthusiastic belief. Lots of sleep companies claim to make smarter and/or life-changing products. Some really are that great, but all too often those things fall short of their own high expectations. A pillow made from a new fabric to consistently feel like “the cold side of the pillow” was one such thing that sounded too good to be true. What was this supposedly “new” fabric, and what planet did it hail from?
For hot sleepers everywhere, I am very happy to say that I was proven wrong. I was – and still am – surprised by how well Helix’s Cool Pillow works.
I’m a little confused by its efficiency, and it’s made me wonder what conspiracy kept this science from us in the sweaty, toss-and-turn evenings of summers past.
A couple of weeks ago I read about the pillow online, which claimed to be so cool thanks to a knit fabric that has a higher heat transfer than most materials (ultra-cool knit polyethylene), and asked Helix if they could send us a pillow to try out in person.
Insider Picks only writes articles on things we genuinely stand behind, so I hope it doesn’t sound cheesy to say that that the first thing I noticed about the pillow is how legitimately cool to the touch it is. In terms of fabric, the cover feels slightly technical – sort of dense and sleek – like other performance materials. Under a pillowcase, I didn’t feel a difference from other pillows.
My room, in general, is unusually cold, but I have eight pillows in my bed, and none of them feel anything other than room temperature. The Helix Cool Pillow, in the same pile, would feel like it had been sitting on my drafty windowsill the whole day when I got home. And it continued to feel cold to the touch throughout the night.
If you’re a hot sleeper, I can say that I haven’t come across another pillow that actually makes a difference where heat transfer is concerned. My PangeaBed pillow ($95) (infused with copper for better heat transfer, too) is noticeably cooler than most, and one of my all-time favorites thanks to its unparalleled bounce and antimicrobial benefits, but it doesn’t come within a swinging distance of the Helix Cool Pillow in terms of temperature control.
As an added upgrade, the Helix Cool Pillow is adjustable thanks to an inconspicuous side zipper. You can add or remove layers to suit for multiple sleeping positions and body types.
If you’re unsure what works for your style, refer to the below graph:
I sleep primarily on my stomach, so the first night when I hadn’t yet removed layers was uncomfortable thanks to the neck tilt that the added bulk caused. The Helix pillow has enough layers to be suitable for “side sleepers with broad shoulders,” so the majority of buyers will probably want to adjust to meet their own size and sleep style.
In terms of cost, the Helix Cool Pillow still comes at a competitive price compared to other popular mattress and bedding startups. You can get either the Standard size at $115 or the King at $129. Without the cooling technology, the adjustable pillow alone is $85 for Standard size and $99 for King. Shipping is free, and Helix is currently having a winter sale, so if you’re looking to get one of their customizable mattresses (find our review here), you can use the promo code “SUMMER125” at checkout for $125 off a mattress and other product, or “SUMMER75” for $75 off a mattress alone.
If you sleep hot and have been looking for great purchases to add to your sleeping space to improve your sleep by actually making you noticeably cooler, I highly recommend giving Helix Cool Pillow a look. As of now, it’s the best temperature-controlled pillow out there in my opinion, and it exceeded all of my expectations by actually fulfilling its own big claims.
The Helix Cool Pillow, based on my experience, really does feel like “the cold side of the pillow”. Plus, if you aren’t as much of a fan, you have a 100-night sleep trial to fall back on.
