Just days after it was announced that National Service and the National Civics Bureau (BTN) would be discontinued by Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman, his predecessor Khairy Jamaluddin has resigned as the Commander of the 508 Regiment of the Territorial Army on Wednesday (Aug 15).

The former chief of United Malays National Organisation (Umno) Youth submitted his resignation letter and an application to terminate his credentials, he said in a tweet.

He is still currently awaiting a response over the resignation, and he has said that he resigned as his “presence in the Corps and the Army is no longer welcomed”, The Star reported him saying.

Mr Khairy has held the position since 2014, and is also the first minister to be awarded a military title after participating in several training courses organised by the regiment.

“Submission of resignation letter as Commander of 508AW and the application to terminate credentials to Major General Datuk Zainal AP BPS. Thank you to the 508AW team for cooperating for nearly five years since I became commander”, he said.
