One of Malaysia’s most legendary songwriters and pianists Datuk Ooi Eow Jin is reportedly suffering from deteriorating health, and his wife is now selling Chinese New Year snacks to pay for his treatment.
According to The Star, the 80-year-old musician now lives in a nursing home in Petaling Jaya as he suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease and diabetes.
His wife, Datin Elaine Khaw, has started selling kuih kapit and taufu crispies to cover the cost of Ooi’s treatment.
The Star quoted her as saying that Ooi is now too weak to move around by himself and requires constant supervision.
Meanwhile, the 78-year-old also has to look after their 54-year-old elder son, who has been ill after a brain tumour was discovered when he was just 14.
Their youngest son died of leukaemia in his youth.
“These are just the sad things of my life I put away. I store it away somewhere, and try to pretend it didn’t happen,” Ooi said of the tragedy in an interview with Poskod.MY before he was forced to retire from his pianist job due to illness.
The Star reported on Jan 12 that Khaw is selling kuih kapit biscuits at RM20 per tin and taufu crispies for RM18 per packet.
Each tin of Kuih Kapit sold gives her RM2, she told the daily. But ever since word of her fundraising efforts got out, she has been inundated with requests and has stopped taking orders.
Non-governmental organisation SeniorsAloud is helping the family with Ooi’s nursing home fees.
