Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V personally praised the government headed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for its involvement in Malaysia’s development through various initiatives, reported Bernama.
At the opening of the Sixth Term of the 13th Parliament on Monday (Mar 5), His Majesty said that the government’s commitment and contributions have led to outcomes that are enjoyed by the people.
Specifically, its contributions to maintaining national security, peace and sovereignty.
“Thank you to the government led by the Prime Minister who has galvanised efforts to bring further progress to our beloved nation, Malaysia,” Sultan Muhammad V said.
His Majesty also took particular interest in the government’s ability to steer the country’s economic transactions despite global economic uncertainty.
The government was complimented for focus in employing fiscal transformation policies as well as its prudent management of national economy and finance.
The King said that government finances were expected to strengthen thanks to higher revenue collection, moderate growth in spending and continued decline of targeted fiscal deficit.
He added that international reserves have remained strong and the federal government’s debt has been kept under control.
Further commenting on the national economic issue, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong said Malaysia’s external trade would stay resilient in consonance with increasing global trade.
“The country also continues to be the investment destination of choice and is expected to be able to attract more investment in 2018. It is hoped that this positive performance momentum can be maintained.”
Nonetheless His Majesty pressed for further efforts to boost progress for the sake of future generations, saying that maintaining the success is more difficult than achieving it.
He said: “Thus, I urge that all the programmes and projects that had been planned are implemented by taking into account the current challenges facing the nation.”
He also welcomed continued measures by the government to deal with societal issues through different initiatives.
“We commend the continuous measures taken in addressing issues that are close to the hearts and minds of the people, especially those pertaining to the cost of living,” His Majesty said in a report by The Edge Markets.
“We believe that more programmes will be introduced with the establishment of the National Action Council on Cost of Living to ease the burden of the people.”
Targeted subsidies and assistance for the needy will continue, he added.
