Credit card company Mastercard announced on Wednesday (Sept 19) that it has signed a multi-year partnership with hit video game, “League of Legends” (LOL).

LOL is an insanely popular game with an estimated player base of around 100 million gamers a month; and the emerging sport of playing it competitively, called e-sports, is no different.

Not only is the game popular, but the tournaments to showcase the top teams battling it out to win trophies have become a spectacle as well.

With elaborate performances planned just for the tournament and people filling up arenas to watch, the audience that e-sports commands is only growing bigger each day.

With 380 million people watching e-sports globally, Mastercard has taken advantage of its popularity and will become the game’s exclusive payment service partner and the first global partner of an e-sport.

Though the exact details of the partnership have yet to be revealed, a Mastercard spokesperson said that it is “comparable to a sponsorship with a traditional partner in terms of investment”.

In addition to that, Mastercard will also offer fans different opportunities through this deal such as being able to attend behind the scenes tours or watch with a pro player from VIP seats during e-sports tournaments.

There will also be a special LOL-themed credit card made available as part of the deal.

At the global announcement of the partnership, chief marketing and communications officer of Mastercard, Raja Rajamannar, said: “We are excited about the experiences and benefits we can bring to the world’s largest e-sport – both in-game and to the millions of “League of Legends” fans that watch and attend the tournaments each year.”
