At least 10 people were killed and several more were wounded or injured in a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, on Thursday morning, the Oregon attorney general told MSNBC.
The gunman, identified as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer, is also dead, according to NBC’s Peter Williams.
While little was known about the gunman as of early Thursday evening, reports were starting to come in from bystanders who witnessed the attack.
One such account is particularly disturbing.
Kortney Moore, an 18-year-old student at Umpqua Community College, told Oregon newspaper The News-Review that she was in her Writing 115 class when the attack began.
After the shooter shot her teacher in the head from outside the window, he entered the classroom and told people to get on the ground, she said. The shooter then demanded that people stand up and state their religion, Moore told The News-Review. After doing so, he started firing.
Moore got on the ground with people who had been shot.
