One student was shot dead at the student union on Savannah State University in George on Thursday, ABC News reports.
The campus was placed under a security lockdown after the shooting, which has since been lifted.
The campus of the historically black university is located in the heart of Savannah, an Atlantic seaport that is Georgia’s oldest city and the seat of Chatham County.
ABC News reports that the shooting occurred during an “altercation” near the student union.
Two women who were in the student union at the time told a reporter for NBC News station WSAV that a fight broke out and ended with someone being shot near his collarbone. People at the scene of the shooting helped the injured student until an ambulance came by applying pressure to his wound.
Christopher Starks, a junior from the Atlanta area, died in the shooting, according to ABC. No arrests have yet been made. Police are investigating the crime.
