Apple’s iPhone X introduced the ‘notch’ trend 2 years ago. Now, smartphone makers are trying to kill it once and for all.
Apple's iPhone X featured a small cut-out, or "notch," to house a facial recognition system, and most other smartphone makers followed suit.
Lenovo might be first to release a smartphone with an all-screen front — without the iPhone X-style notch
Lenovo may be paving the way to a full-screen notch-free display. While Apple's iPhone X sports an edge-to-edge screen, it's not "all-screen," due to the notch on the top of the phone that houses Apple's TrueDepth camera system for Face ID. The Lenovo Z5, in comparison, is actually "all-screen."
Apple is reportedly designing a smaller notch for the 2019 iPhones.
While 3D cameras such as Apple's True Depth camera can map objects that are close-by, lidar can map objects as far as 100 meters away.
Let's hope Apple finds a way to hide that ugly notch at the top of the phone using software.
