- A Japanese man has been arrested after police found multiple severed heads, arms, and legs in his apartment. Takahiro Shiraishi is believed to have scattered the parts across multiple storage boxes and covered them with cat litter. Police started the investigation after discovering that a suicidal woman had been in contact with him.
A Japanese man has been arrested after the severed parts of nine bodies were found in his apartment.
Takahiro Shiraishi, 27, was taken into custody after police found the severed body parts – some of which were in a cooler – in his apartment in Zama, a city to Tokyo’s southwest.
The parts included at least two severed heads, arms, and legs, scattered across picnic coolers in the apartment, and covered with what appeared to be cat litter, Japan’s Asahi Shimbun reported. Police believe the heads and limbs belonged to eight women and one man, the Kyodo news agency reported.
Police also found a saw, which was believed to have been used to cut up the bodies. Shiraishi allegedly told police he mutilated the bodies and disposed of some of the parts in the rubbish, Kyodo said.
Shiraishi has reportedly confessed to the murders. “It’s true that I tried to hide the bodies of the people I killed to destroy evidence,” he reportedly told police, according to Kyodo.

Shiraishi is currently being held on a charge of discarding a body, and police are expected to file murder charges soon, Kyodo said.
Police made the discovery after investigating the disappearance of a 23-year-old woman last week, Asahi said. Police found she had exchanged messages with Shiraishi on a website on suicide, alongside security footage of her with Shiraishi walking around two train stations, one of which was near the apartment.
One of Shiraishi’s neighbours told Asahi that since Shiraishi moved into his flat two months ago, there had been odd smells coming out of the apartment.
“I thought it smelled like sewage,” the neighbour said. “It was something I never smelled before.”
This is not the first time a murder has been linked to a suicide website. In 2005, a 36-year-old man in Osaka was arrested after killing three people he met through a suicide website, who believed he shared their desire to commit suicide, Kyodo reported at the time. He was sentenced to death two years later.
