Love video streaming? Chances are, you’ve heard of Bigo Live.

The popular video streaming social network, which lets users stream videos of themselves and chat with friends, was the top-grossing app among Malaysian mobile phone users in 2018, according to new research published by US-based app analytics firm, App Annie.

The research looked at how much consumers were spending on their apps, based on the amounts earned by the iOS App Store and Google Play from paid downloads and in-app purchases.

It found that Bigo Live – made by Singapore company Bigo – earned the most consumer dollars, followed by video and movie watching site Netflix, karaoke app Sing! by Smule, dating app Tinder and Line, Japan’s most popular messaging app.

Netflix has a subscription service, which is required in order to use the app, while the paid version of Sing! by Smule gives users unlimited songs to sing to, and a duet feature.

Tinder’s paid services give users benefits such as unlimited swipes and the ability to hide their age, while Line has a digital payment function, called Line Pay, that lets users register credit cards and buy items from the Line store.

But while Malaysian users spent a significant amount on Line, the most-used chat app by far was WhatsApp, the research found.

This was followed by Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and popular Chinese chat app, WeChat.
