Walmart is ramping up its offerings for babies and kids in the wake of the demise of Toys R Us.
The company has added more than 30,000 new baby items to its website in the last year, and it’s now launching a new section on its website designed to make it easier for parents to shop for nursery items including cribs, chairs, and wall art, Walmart said Thursday.
The company’s new nursery landing page is organized into six themed collections: wanderlust, boho chic, mid-century modern, baby boy, baby girl, and gender-neutral nurseries.
Each collection directs shoppers to hundreds of products that correspond with the selected theme.
“This new, dedicated nursery experience complements our broader baby assortment online, which we’ve been growing aggressively by adding more than 30,000 new items over the past year,” Lauren Uppington, vice president and general manager of Walmart.com’s baby assortment, wrote in a blog posted Thursday. “It also follows efforts to create a new in-store experience in the baby department in more than 2,000 stores across the country.”
Walmart is investing in its baby offering following the death of Babies R Us and its parent company, Toys R Us, which liquidated all its US stores this year following an unsuccessful attempt to emerge from bankruptcy.
Toys R Us generated roughly $6.5 billion in US sales last year.
As Toys R Us struggled to emerge from bankruptcy, search traffic for baby-related items on Walmart has surged, growing by nearly 40% in the last year.
